[ Performing Arts - Assembly Programme Term 2 ]

 On the last week of Term 2, we invited Lila Drums, a company specialised in Drumming to perform an assembly programme titled "World of Drums", showing different drums & percussion instruments from around the globe. The instruments were aunthentic and brought in from the country of origin. Not only pupils learned about the background of the instrument, they also learned about the sound the instruments made. And of course, a performance treat for them which was truly enjoyable!

Keyboard Lessons for Primary 5

In Term 2, Primary 5 pupils are learning how to play keyboard. This is a popular instrument to learn. They are taught using new foldable keyboard which are easy to use.

For those pupils who do not have access to keyboard instrument at home, they are encouraged to download smartphones/ipad application of keyboard. Alternatively, they can practise their keyboard playing skills on a virtual keyboard from this website.

Boomwhackers Lessons for Primary 2 and Primary 3 pupils

For 8 weeks, Primary 2 and Primary 3 pupils are learning Boomwhackers Instruments. Each of them will be playing a single note as a part of the C Major scale. They are playing various songs like "Lazy Pony", "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", "Chan Mali Chan", "Rasa Sayang", "Lightly Row" and many familiar tunes.

Besides helping pupils to develop musically, this instrument teaches pupil how to have teamwork. They need co-operation skills and listening skills in order to play the song well as a group. Pupils are also trained to be confident in performing as they are given opportunities to perform in front of the class as well as in the canteen during recess for Music@Recess Programme.

Ukulele Lessons for Primary 6 pupils

Every Primary 6 pupils is undergoing 7-week Ukulele lessons. They are learning how to play simple pop songs. Ukulele is a handy instrument and pretty easy to learn. Since Ukulele is quite affordable, pupils are encouraged to continue learning Ukulele on their own after completing the programme.

In Juying Primary School, Primary 6 pupils are learning to play a Soprano Ukulele (the smallest one, usually for beginners).

They also learn about the anatomy of Ukulele, which belongs to the 'Guitar' family of instruments.

They also learn how to tune the instrument.

The most important part is, pupils learn how to play these chords during lesson so that they can accompany a song with their Ukulele-playing :)

Orff Lesson for Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils

 In term 1, Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils learned how to play  Orff Instruments in their music lesson. These are melodic percussion instruments (such as xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels) which are played by using mallets (sticks to hit the instruments).

Pupils started off with learning C Major scale, which is the fundamental scale before learning any melodic instruments (be it boomwhackers, piano or Orff instruments). They were also taught rhythm and playing skills. The lesson was pitched at beginner level so that it was easy for pupils to follow.

They also learned how to play "Bow, wow, wow" as a 4-part music ensemble. Pupils were divided into 4 groups, each playing different part. On top of that, pupils were taught how to compose a short 4-bar music.

Arts in Education -- Assembly Performance (Term 1)

On 25 Feb 2013, pupils had the privilege to watch a stunning performance by GLEE Studios Singapore. Pupils were exposed to Show Choirs by watching the performance as they learned how different elements of singing, dancing and acting could be combined into a show choir performance. Students also learned about different voice parts in a choir.
